Tournament Details

Welcome, friends, to the 2024 Langhorne Cup!

In this, our fifth offering of the finest golf competition this side of the Atlantic, we’ve changed up the old formula, to make playing the tournament a little easier and organizing the damned thing a lot easier.

Format

The Cup will be played in a format that features a grouped field for the first round, followed by multiple rounds of traditional bracket play.

First Round

  • The field is divided into multiple Groups of four players each.
  • Each Group will play a round-robin of one-on-one match play games, so that every player in a particular Group plays one match against each of their three Group-mates.
  • The top two players from each group advance to bracket play.

Subsequent rounds proceed as standard bracketed match play games until a field of finalists is produced.

The finals match will be a stroke play event.

By keeping the majority of the matches in groups, scheduling should be easier, since you have three potential opponents for your first match, and two for your second.

Tournament Rules

  • Games are to be handicapped match play.
  • Max handicap: 36
  • Round One matches may be settled over 18 or 9 holes, but 18 is strongly recommended in keeping with our spirit of camaraderie.
  • Groups should decide their own tiebreakers. Play a sudden death match, have a putt-off, shoot a round of par-3’s – get creative! If your group needs input from the commissioner or Cup committee, email Chris Tsavatewa.
  • All Round One matches need to be completed by Sept. 15.
  • Report match results to Matt Smith as soon as possible after completing a match.

Help the Bloody Historian

Look, we know we screwed up. We let a Fool and a Drunkard appoint himself the historian for this event, and in years past, it has led to some truly horrific Sports Reporting. While perhaps talented in turning a phrase, he is nonetheless Lazy, Shiftless, Absent-Minded, and Generally Unreliable. As such, he needs all the help that Providence (and our membership) can provide.

Please take pictures and videos as you’re out on the links. Send those to Matt Smith for inclusion on the website.

Please remember the Outlandish, Outstanding, or just Downright Funny things that happen before, during, or after the match, too. Email an account of those to Lee Greenway for adaptation into the upcoming novella, “The Importance of Being Langhorne,” to be published on this website (and in some of the more discerning Sporting Magazines).
